Hi, I'm Cathy. I started this comm because I've been trying to improve my health and get in better shape, and I figure 6 miles is a good place to start.

I live just south of Denver, Colorado. We're still having bouts of winter-type weather, but I was able to get out of my office and walk around the neighborhood twice last week and it felt really great.

I'm 30 and I've never been an athletic person, though I have a collection of aerobic/cardio dvds that I try to do regularly. I also enjoy swimming and a friendly game of tennis. I would say my fitness level is beginner - I don't have a lot of stamina, though I have improved in recent months. I'd like to lose 20 pounds this year and improve my endurance.

When I lived in Seattle, I did a 5K walk with a few coworkers in Spring '05. I also might try another 5K here in Colorado in May, if I can talk my sister into doing it with me.

For this challenge, I think I'll start in earnest ~April 10 after I return from vacation. First, I would train ~4 weeks for the May 5K if I sign up for that, then another 4-6 weeks to train for 6 miles. Which would make my 6-mile target mid-to-late June.

I'd be happy to have a buddy or group to pace with, if anyone else wants to shoot for June as well.

Sure! I'll need to get some short runs in gradually, as I've had joint issues in the past, but I've been thinking I'd like to start running again. I say we try for a specific day and see if we can't do our 10Ks around the same time of day, even :D

rad ^_^ i've had off-and-on trouble with my knees (twisting, spraining, straining, etc) since junior high, too, so i'm mostly aiming to walk with some jogging peppered in. awesome. june is probably a good target, anyway, since it shouldn't be terribly hot by then.

i figured out a tentative training schedule that could put me at 6 miles on or around jun 21. would that weekend work for you?

i might even continue training for a solo half-marathon before my bday (sep 30) if the 6 miles is a good experience.

Damn, I've got a wedding in Montana that weekend. How's the one before or after work? I used to do half-marathons and really liked them - long enough to require real endurance, but not enough to make you want to die :D

I might try to pick a race coming up some time this year.... Living where I do, I'm going to try to somehow work out a time after pollen season but before it gets to be, like.... 110 degrees. x_x I dunno. I could always do everything inside, but my treadmill is not one where you can run freely on it (it has handles) and that's not as good. I guess I could use the one at work. /rambling >___>
